Before Breast AugmentationWomen choose to have breast augmentation for a variety of personal reasons. Many women want to restore their pre-pregnancy figure, which has lost volume and shape. Others would like to enhance their femininity with a fuller figure. Successful breast augmentations have positive aesthetic and psychological results, improving self-esteem and quality of life.

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. The first breast implant surgery was performed in 1962, and techniques have been continually improved and refined over the past 50 years. But though the procedure is safe, you should consider carefully before deciding to have a breast augmentation. Studies have shown that people who are fully informed about their procedure have much greater satisfaction with the results.

Here are some questions to ask your plastic surgeon before you get a breast augmentation, to ensure you will be thrilled with your new figure.

Should I have breast augmentation surgery?

You should have an in-depth consultation with Dr. Levine to ensure that breast augmentations are right for you. Breast augmentations enhance the size and shape of your breasts. If you are dissatisfied with your breast size, or if you want to restore shape and fullness, you are a good candidate for breast augmentation. If you want to lift and shape sagging breasts, you may prefer to have breast lift surgery, or mastopexy. Dr. Levine will recommend the best surgery for the results you desire.

If you decide to have breast augmentation, Dr. Levine will help you choose the type and shape of implants which will give you the results you desire.

Do you have before and after pictures I can view?

Dr. Levine will show you before and after photos of breast augmentations he has performed. This will give you a realistic sense of what you can expect from your surgery. Good plastic surgeons know that having realistic expectations greatly improves post-surgery satisfaction.

What happens during breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is also known as breast implant surgery. Your surgeon will make incisions in your armpit, around your nipple, or in the natural crease where your breast meets your chest. The implant is placed either behind the breast tissue, or under the muscle.

What type of implants do you use?

Breast implants are medical devices with solid silicone rubber shells. They are filled wither with saline or cohesive gel (also known as gel implants, or gummy bear implants). The type and shape of the implant depends on the appearance you want, as well as your anatomy, body type, and preference. You will have discussed the type of implant with Dr. Levine before surgery.

What is the recovery time?

Your recovery time depends on the type of surgical procedure performed. Most breast augmentations are done under a general anesthetic. Most women can return home that same day, and most women can return to work after three or four days.
