At one time cosmetic surgery used to be almost a female-only territory, but that has been rapidly changing. The number of men who are having cosmetic procedures has increased dramatically in the past 10 years.

Cosmetic Surgery For MenWhat motivates men to have cosmetic surgery? Some men view it as a means of staying competitive in a job market that increasingly values youth and good looks. For others, it offers the opportunity to improve features they’ve felt self-conscious about for most of their lives. Other men are motivated to look better by their significant other, or they many be experiencing a life transition such as a divorce.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the most popular procedures for men are as follows:

  • Liposuction. Liposuction, a method for targeted removal of areas of unwanted fat on the body, is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed on men today. The three most popular areas are the neck, the abdomen and the flanks (love handles) and is an excellent treatment for fat deposits that do not respond well to diet and exercise.
  • Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty). Men who have eyelid surgery are often concerned about the “hang dog” look caused by sagging lower eyelids and/or bags under their eyes. By removing excess fat and skin around the eye area it reduces puffiness and drooping eyelids, resulting in a more youthful appearance.
  • Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty). Nose reshaping, involves re sculpting the nose to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance or to repair physical problems such breaks caused through sports, birth defects and breathing problems.
  • Male breast reduction (Gynecomastia). Male breast reduction is an effective treatment for gynecomastia, a condition in which men develop feminine-looking breasts. Breast reduction involves excising glandular tissue, liposuction, or some combination of the two.
  • Ear Surgery (Otoplasty). Often referred to as “pinning back the ears”. Otoplasty corrects and improves the shape and position of the ear. Ears that protrude are placed back in a more natural position. The shape can also be improved.

Other popular cosmetic procedures for men include: chin implants, hair transplants, jaw restructuring and facelifts.
