Brazilian Butt LiftAlthough breast augmentation remains the top cosmetic surgery, buttock augmentation is one of the fastest growing procedures for 2013 increasing 16% from 2012 according to the Annual Report of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The media has given much attention to the derrieres of celebrities such as Kim Kardasian, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Pippa Middleton, Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie which has resulted in many women now looking into how they can improve the appearance of their backside.

Buttock augmentation or the Brazilian Lift can help women with small, flat or poorly developed buttocks add volume and contour to their posteriors to produce a higher, fuller buttock. This can be done by increasing the size, lifting, enhancing its contour, correcting proportional imbalances and improving firmness.

There are two ways a buttock augmentation can be preformed:

Fat Transfer. By using a liposuction devise fat is transferred from selected areas. Common sites for obtaining fat include the patient’s thighs, abdomen, and the flanks (love handles) or anywhere there are sufficient fat deposits. Fat is usually taken from areas where even with weight loss, fat in these areas remains. The donor fat is then inserted into the buttocks through small incisions about the size of a grain of rice. Fat transfer is the most common procedure used in a buttock augmentation.

Buttock Implants. For thinner women who do not have sufficient fat deposits for a transfer, buttock implants are used. An incision is made between the two buttock cheeks. A custom implant is inserted above the muscle of the buttocks.

Both surgeries are performed under a general anesthetic and may take approximately 90 minutes to four hours, based on multiple factors, including the amount of fat removed, how many areas the fat comes from and the patient’s desired size/shape of the buttocks. Patients can go home the same day.
