How to Care for Legs after a Liposuction Procedure

Posted by Dr. Levine in Liposuction

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that requires the removal of unwanted fat. The liposuction process includes the creation of tiny incisions in which a hollow tube is inserted to melt the fat cells, allowing the liquefied fat to then be removed from the body. This ultimately results in a more contoured appearance in whichever part of the body the procedure was conducted.

When it comes to having liposuction done on the legs, it’s important to know what the procedure entails and how to adequately care for the legs after having the surgery done. Otherwise, you could end up with less than appealing results. Caring for your body properly is essential as to how it will heal and how successful the procedure is.

Tips for Properly Caring for Legs after Liposuction

  • After the surgery has been performed, set aside at least four days for that are free from extensive walking.
  • Lay or sit with your legs elevated for several days and take several short walks to stimulate the healing process.
  • Use ice packs on the legs for the next two days following the procedure. This will help prevent swelling and soothe the legs from any possible soreness.
  • Make sure to wear protective clothing and to use sheets or other fabrics to protect your furniture or bed. It is common to have fluid leakage from the incisions for a few days after the procedure. Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t care about.
  • Try not to overexert yourself until you are fully healed within a few days or after the surgeon tells you it is okay to go back normal activity.
  • Avoid alcohol and anything that may stop you from healing properly. Only use the pain medication prescribed or suggested by the doctor.
  • Make sure that you have someone to drive you home after the surgery and to care for you for the first few days after your surgery.
  • Drink plenty of fluids especially for the first several days. Water is highly important during this stage of the healing process.
  • Only eat light meals until the anesthesia has worn off to prevent yourself from becoming sick.
  • Wear the compression garments for the entire first week. Then, wear them for a lesser time period through the day for the next 2 to 3 weeks. This helps to shape the legs after the surgery. You will be given instructions about the use of the compression garment.
  • For the first two weeks, it is suggested that you massage the area. Don’t do this until the pain and bruising has subsided.
