Breast Implants
Breast implant procedures are designed to enhance the size and shape of the breast. Breast implants may be performed for a variety of reasons: to enhance breast size when a woman feels her breasts are too small, to restore breast volume and shape following weight loss or pregnancy (with or without breastfeeding), and to improve and restore shape due to the loss of volume and sagging associated with aging.
Breast implants are medical devices with a solid silicone rubber shell. A breast implant can be filled with either saline (saline implant) or silicone (silicone implant). Silicone implants are now called cohesive gel implants. There are several different types of breast implants available. A breast implant can vary in height, size and shape; it can be round or breast-shaped (teardrop or anatomical). There are different surfaces to a breast implant as well; it can be smooth or rough (textured implant). Breast implants can also vary in height, from low height (low profile) to a high height (high profile). Since every woman’s breasts are different, the type of breast implant will depend on the breast appearance, anatomy, body type, lifestyle and patient preference. Dr. Levine will ensure that each patient fully understands all of her options and will recommend the breast implant that is best suited to achieve the desired result.
The incision for a breast implant can be placed in the axilla or armpit, around the nipple, or in the natural crease where the breast meets the chest. The breast implant can either be placed behind the breast tissue (submammary or subglandular placement), or in a pocket under the muscle that lies just beneath the breast (submuscular placement). Dr. Levine utilizes all these techniques and fully discusses the most suitable technique with the patient at the time of consultation. Breast augmentation procedures are usually done under a general anesthetic. The patient can go home the same day and is able to return to work after one week. Breast implant surgery can either be performed at St. Joseph’s Health Centre or at our private clinic (CIBO) that specializes in cosmetic surgery.
Dr. Levine meets with each patient personally for an in-depth consultation, where the breast implant procedure is discussed in detail. Possible complications and postoperative recovery are also explained. Dr. Levine ensures that each patient fully understands the expectations and scope of a breast implant procedure. He also makes certain that prospective patients are good candidates for breast augmentation surgery. As each patient’s situation is unique, breast implant surgery is customized to achieve each individual's desired result. Alternative procedures are discussed if indicated.
If you would like to discuss breast implants with Dr. Levine, please contact his office for a personal consultation.
