Who is the right candidate for a breast reduction?

For men with over-developed or enlarged breasts (gynecomastia), surgically removing the fat and/or glandular tissue may be an option. This condition can occur at any age and can stem from hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or as a reaction to certain drugs such as anabolic steroids, marijuana or excessive alcohol consumption.

Gynecomastia can lead to low self-esteem and self-confidence, and worse, body dysmorphia. Through breast reduction surgery, your chest can be formed into a masculine shape and thus increasing your self-confidence.

Gynomastia is distinguished as:

  • Excess localized fat in the breast area
  • A surplus of glandular tissue
  • Extra skin around the breast
  • A condition that occurs in one or both breasts
  • Enlarged male breasts occurs in 40-60% of men

To know if you qualify for this surgery, review the following list:

  • Are you in good health with no active diseases or pre-existing medical conditions?
  • Have you tried other medical treatments to treat your condition but to no avail?
  • Are you a current non-smoker?
  • Are you drug-free?
  • Have you maintained a relatively normal weight?
  • Do you live an active and healthy lifestyle?
  • Has your breast development stabilized?
    • This surgery can be performed on adolescents but it is preferred that you wait until after puberty
  • Do you shy away from places like public pools, beaches, exercise clubs or any place you will have to bare your chest?
  • Do you worry about being intimate with another person because of your chest?

Men who meet most of the above criteria, posses a positive outlook and have realistic expectations for this surgery are perfect candidates.

What should I expect during consultation before a breast reduction?

When you come in for a consultation, we will ask you certain questions about your background like:

  • Have you ever suffered from impaired liver function?
  • Have you ever experienced high levels of estrogen from the use of certain medications?
  • Have you ever had a lump removed from your breast?
  • Have you ever been diagnosed with any medical conditions that affect the breasts?
  • Is there a history of breast related illnesses in your family?

We will also ask questions about your diet, psychical and mental shape.

How should I prepare for a breast reduction?

At least two weeks before your scheduled surgery you should start your preparation by:

  • Quitting smoking
    • It is imperative that you cease tobacco use before and after the surgery
    • Smoking can lead to post-op complications and hinder the healing process
  • Discontinue using any medications that contain aspirin, ibuprofen, blood-thinners, Vitamin E, herbal supplements of any kind because they can cause prolonged bleeding post-surgery
  • Eat a balanced diet and remain active prior to surgery
    • You should do this after surgery too, as soon as you feel up to it
  • The night before your surgery you will need to stop eating or drinking at midnight
    • This means no water, no gum or hard candy
    • If you are taking blood pressure or heart medications, you may take these as directed

What are the steps of a breast reduction procedure?

There are two techniques used to surgically treat gynomastia: Liposuction and excision. Often they are done together in combination.  This will be discussed in consultation. Both will follow most of the same steps beginning with anesthesia.

1. Anesthesia:

  • Medications are administered to make you comfortable during your surgery
    • You may receive intravenous sedation or general anesthesia

2. Liposuction technique:

  • If your enlarged breasts are the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction is used.

The breast is first injected with a saline solution called tumescent fluid

    • An insertion of a thin hollow tube called a cannula is made through several small incisions
    • The cannula is moved back and forth and used to loosen excess fat
    • The fat is removed from the body by vacuum suction

OR

3. Excision technique:

  • This is used when the glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed.
  • In most cases, this can be done through an incision around the areola
  • In extreme cases, a procedure similar to a female breast reduction procedure may be necessary

Sometimes a combination of liposuction and excision techniques is used to treat gynomastia. This will be discussed with you before your surgery is scheduled.

How long does breast reduction recovery take?

Recovery varies from person to person, but most people are able to return to their normal routine 7-10 days following the procedure. You should, however, take it easy immediately after your surgery.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure
  • You may experience mild to moderate discomfort in your chest
  • Post-surgery swelling and bruising are normal and will subside in a few weeks
  • Do not take any medications that were not prescribed for pain
  • If you experience any symptoms of dizziness, shortness of breath or swelling in areas other than your chest, contact us or your primary doctor
  • Avoid strenuous activities for at least 4 weeks to give your body a chance to fully heal

How can I maintain the results of breast reduction?

A male breast reduction is meant to offer permanent results.

  • Excess fat, glandular tissue and skin that are removed will not grow back
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay active to prevent weight gain
  • Avoid drugs that influence testosterone levels and/or are known to increase estrogen production
  • Do not drink to excess
  • Remain smoke free
    • This includes cigars and marijuana

How much does breast reduction cost?

  • This procedure may be partially covered by OHIP
  • There will be a facility fee and anesthetic fee
  • The total cost is $6000 + HST
  • The cost may be higher if a female type breast reduction has to be performed
