How is a breast augmentation done?

Breast augmentation, or mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that increases the size, shape or fullness of your breasts. A silicone or saline implant is placed under the chest muscles or breast tissue, giving you a more ample and shapely breasts. This procedure can be done to enlarge breasts that are naturally small. It can also restore breast size and shape after pregnancy, weight loss or breastfeeding. Breast augmentation can improve self-esteem if you have breasts that are two different sizes, asymmetrical, elongated or misshapen. This surgery is also common for women who wish to appear more buxom as they age.

There are several ways for breast augmentation to be done:

  • Via a crease under your breast (inframammary incision)
  • Via the areola (periareolar incision)
  • Via the armpit (transaxillary incision)

We will figure out the best type of incision for your body in advance of the surgery.

Here are the steps of a breast augmentation:

1. Anesthesia:

  • You will be administered anesthesia for your comfort
  • This will be done either intravenously or generally

2. Incision:

  • The type of incision made will depend on what we discuss prior to surgery
  • Incisions are made inconspicuously to minimize visible scarring

3. Insertion:

  • Post-incision, a breast implant is inserted into a pocket in one of two places:
    • A submuscular placement, under the pectoral muscle, or;
    • A submammary/subglandular placement, directly behind the breast tissue over the pectoral muscle
  • The method for insertion depends on the type of implant, incision, and desired breast shape
  • This will be discussed in a comprehensive pre-operative consultation

4. Closing the incisions:

  • Layered structures and sutures in the breast tissue are used to close the incisions, along with skin adhesive and surgical tape close to the skin
  • Incision lines do fade over time
  • You will notice the results of your breast augmentation immediately

How long does breast augmentation take?

  • The procedure will take between 1-2 hours
  • It should be noted that your breasts will be sore after the procedure
  • You should take 24-48 hours to rest undisturbed
  • You may need to wear a support bra for 5-7 days after the augmentation
  • You should avoid strenuous activity for 2-3 weeks post-surgery

What type of anesthesia is used for breast augmentation?

There are three types of anesthesia that can be used for breast augmentation procedures:

  • General anesthesia
    • You are put to sleep
    • They are usually administered as liquids via IV
    • They can be given as gases for inhalation
    • This is the most common type of anesthesia used for breast surgeries
  • Local anesthesia
    • The specific location that requires surgery is numbed
    • They stop pain in that immediate area only
    • They’re given through an injection directly into the site
    • This type can be used with conscious sedation during a breast augmentation procedure
  • Sedation anesthesia
    • Because your cognizance is altered, this type is often called Conscious Sedation
    • This sedation type is done through IV
    • There are three variants: minimal, moderate and deep
  • No matter which anesthesia is used, you will likely not experience a “hang-over” effect when you awaken
  • You may be groggy when you wake up from your surgery but this feeling will fade quickly

What is the difference between silicone and saline breast implants?

  • Saline and silicone implants are both contained in an outer silicone shell
  • Saline implants are filled with salt water that has been sterilized
    • They are inserted empty and filled once they’re in place
    • If the implants leak, they will collapse and the saline will be naturally absorbed and expelled by the body
  • Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel
    • Silicone gel is a sticky, thick fluid that imitates the feel of human fat
    • These implants look and feel the closest to natural breast tissue
    • If these implants leak, they will not collapse and the gel will remain within the shell or in the breast pocket
  • Although both materials are durable, breast implants may not last a lifetime
  • You may need to have your implants replaced if damaged, although this is not common
  • Even after implantation your breasts can change with age
  • Hormonal factors, gravity, weight fluctuations and pregnancy can also affect your breast size years after you’ve had implants

With silicon and saline implants, some women experience loss of nipple sensation after surgery. This is normal. However, neither type of implant has been known to hinder breast health. Both are safe, common and do not interfere with a woman’s natural aging process.

Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Yes, you will be able to breast feed after an augmentation procedure, however you will need to wait until your breasts have fully healed. Some women do experience milk loss. You may have to discuss ways to increase milk production with your primary physician after a breast augmentation.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The price of breast augmentation varies:

  • You will incur fees for hospital and anesthesia as well as implants
  • The price will depend on the type of implants used
  • The cost is between $6000 to $8000 + HST

If you’ve had a breast augmentation in the past and find your chest has changed drastically, you may want to consider removing your implants and undergoing a breast lift. Although a breast lift procedure will not augment your chest size, it will reshape your breasts and give them a perkier, more youthful appearance.
