Chin enhancement is a procedure that uses surgical implants to change the underlying structure of the face. This provides better balance to the facial features. Chin implants can be made of:

  • Bone or fat tissue
  • Silicone
  • Teflon
  • Dacron

Ideal candidates for a chin enhancement procedure are those who possess:

  • A pointed or square chin
  • A prominent nose
  • A recessed chin
    • Sometimes this ailment is apparent at birth
  • A fleshier neck
  • Can also be done along with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as a rhinoplasty or face lift

How is chin enhancement performed?

There are different types of chin enhancement surgeries. The procedure performed on you will depend on the surgery you have selected. Before any surgery is done, we will take x-rays of your face and chin.

If you are only having an implant put in to round out your chin:

  • You will be administered local or general anesthesia
  • An incision is made on the inside of your mouth or the outside of your chin
  • A pocket is created in front of the chin bone, under the muscles
  • The implant is put inside the pocket
  • It is attached to the bone with sutures or screws
  • Sutures are then used to close the incision

When will I see the results from a chin enhancement?

After surgery, your new chin will become apparent immediately, although it will be swollen. You will be wearing a special facial garment to cover your chin to keep it in position and reduce swelling. Once the swelling goes down, you will notice more definition in your chin. After about 3 weeks you will start seeing the full effects of the surgery.

There are some important facts to know about chin enhancement surgery:

  • The procedure lasts about 1 hour
  • The general recovery time is about 7 days, after which time most people can return to work
  • You will experience swelling and some light bruising
  • You will have to rinse your mouth out several times a day with an antibiotic mouthwash if the incision was done inside the lip
  • You may experience trouble chewing and will have to consume liquid or softer foods for the first few days after surgery

How will my chin look after chin enhancement?

After chin enhancement is performed and you have fully healed, you will notice your chin appears stronger and more proportionate to the rest of your face, as well as being more defined. Chin enhancement will also:

  • Make your nose and other features appear more proportionate to your face
  • Make your neck appear less fleshy
  • Make your jawline appear less prominent in profile
  • Create an overall balance between your features and make your face more symmetrical

How long does a chin implant last?

Most commonly designed chin implants are made of solid silicone elastomer.

These implants last a lifetime and:

  • Do not resorb
  • Do not deviate when placed correctly
  • Do not shrink even if the bone in your mandible thins over time

What should I expect post-op after chin enhancement?

Following chin enhancement surgery it’s important to keep your head elevated. If you can sleep in an upright position it’s suggested you do so.  Prop your head up on 2-3 pillows.

  • Your bandages will be removed the following morning
  • You may have tape applied over your incision
    • This will be removed after a week
  • Do not exercise or lift any heavy objects
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure
  • You may notice a discoloration of your skin
  • You may be numb in the chin area directly following your surgery
    • If this persists for more than 5 days, please visit Dr. Levine’s office
  • Do not wear makeup

How much does chin enhancement cost?

The price of chin enhancement depends on which type you are having done.

  • There will be a facility fee and an anesthesia fee as well as the cost of the chin implant
  • The cost of the procedure is $4,500 + HST
  • More advanced surgeries can cost upwards of $4,500
  • This kind of procedure can be done at the same time as rhinoplasty and facial liposuction, which will increase the price of the procedure
