A face lift, or rhytidectomy as it is clinically known, can improve visible signs of aging of the face. This procedure is done to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, reduce nasolabial folds, reduce jowls and tighten the neck and other signs of aging that plague our faces. The goal of a face lift is to improve the overall aspect of the face, neck and jaw, giving you a more youthful look.

What are the benefits of a face lift?

A face lift has numerous benefits that offer a common goal: to make you appear younger and fresh-faced.

Besides improving your self-confidence a face lift can:

  • Reverse the effects of time
  • Remove any signs of facial stress
  • Create aesthetically pleasing contours
  • Rejuvenate your facial structure
  • Remove excess pockets of fat and skin
  • Erase the consequences of the aging process
  • Produce natural looking results

Generally, patients want this procedure because it provides a more rested appearance without an artificial look. A face lift can last up to 10 years provided you maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes:

  • Following a balanced diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Not smoking or drinking alcohol in excess
  • Reduce exposure to sun

Neglecting the above factors will contribute to the aging process and can reverse the positive effects of a face lift.

What are the procedural steps of a face lift?

There are different types of face lift surgeries performed regularly. Depending on the technique used and the extent of the work being done, the procedural steps will differ. Some procedures involve:

  • Simple skin lifts to eliminate wrinkles
  • Lifting the underlying muscle, fat pads of the face and the skin
  • Mid-face lifting to lift only the face but not the skin of the neck

For the most part the procedural steps are as follows:

1. Anesthesia:

  • We will discuss the type of anesthesia you will be administered before your surgery takes place
  • Anesthesia is given for your comfort, to put you at ease during your procedure
  • It will either be a general anesthetic or local anesthetic with sedation

2. Incision:

  • For traditional face lifts the incision begins in the hairline at the temples
    • The incision continues around the ear, ending at the lower scalp
    • Fat may be sculpted and redistributed from the face, jowls and neck
    • Underlying tissue is repositioned
    • Oftentimes the deeper layers of the face and muscles are lifted as well
    • Skin is re-arranged over the new uplifted contours
    • Excess skin is removed
    • A second incision may be done under the chin to redefine an aging neck
  • For limited incision lifts, the incision differs
    • To fix sagging jowls, loose neck skin and fat accumulation under the chin area, the incision begins in front of the ear lobe
    • It wraps around behind the ear and ends in the lower scalp
  • You may be receiving other procedures with your face lift such as:
    • Facial implants/fat transfer
    • Soft tissue augmentation for recontouring
    • Resurfacing techniques for improving the skin’s tone and texture
    • Wrinkle reduction through the injection of fat or fillers
    • Other facial procedures can be done such as eyelid surgery or nasal re-shaping

3. Closing the incisions

  • All incisions are closed via sutures
  • Staples may be used as well around the hairline
  • We will discuss a suture-care routine with you

How long does a face lift take?

The length of your face lift procedure will depend on the extent of what you’re having done.

  • Mini-face lifts can be performed in  2 hours
  • Standard face lifts can take 4 – 5  hours
  • If you are having other surgeries with your face lift, the whole procedure could take up to 6 hours

What will I look like after a face lift?

After a face lift you will notice some immediate changes to your face. You’re also likely to experience some discomfort.

  • When you awaken from your procedure your face will be covered in bandages
  • When the bandages are removed you may notice the sutures used to hold the facial tissue together and the hairline staples
    • They may be itchy and uncomfortable
      • It’s important to follow the daily incision care routine we will discuss with you
    • The staples will be removed when you come for your follow-up appointment
      • Usually within 7 - 14 days of your surgery
    • Some sutures will dissolve on their own
  • Major swelling and bruising can occur
    • One side of your face may swell more than the other; do not be concerned about this asymmetrical appearance, it will fade
    • Some people experience  bruising
    • Some people find their bruising gets worse after a few days before their face settles down
  • You may experience severe pain, tingling sensations, burning, or numbness
    • This is normal
    • You may be given a prescription for pain medication or told which over-the-counter medications you can take
  • Your eyes may swell even if you have not had an eye procedure with your face lift

If you notice that single-sided swelling happens suddenly and you find yourself in excruciating pain, you need to contact us immediately. You may be experiencing a hematoma which is a rare condition, but only dangerous when left untreated.

How long is the recovery process after a face lift?

We will give you specific recovery and incision care instructions, but please wait until you have adequately healed to resume your everyday activities.

  • Rest for one week to let the swelling go down and keep your head elevated
  • Wait at least 3 - 4 weeks before exercising
  • Do not shower or bathe until you are given the go-ahead
  • You may be able to return to work after approximately 10 - 14 days, but only do so if you are comfortable
  • Wearing earrings or blow-drying your hair may be painful for the first few weeks
  • Avoid alcohol, saunas and steam rooms for a month after a face lift to ensure proper healing
  • Do not smoke

How much does a face lift cost?

A face life can be performed with other procedures such as a forehead lift or eyelid lift. Adding procedures to your surgery will increase the price.

  • There will be a facility fee and anesthesia fee
  • The total cost will be $12,000 + HST
