What is Rhinoplasty and Why Might I Need it?

Simply put, rhinoplasty is a nose job. This procedure is done to correct, reshape and restructure any imperfections on and in the nose.

It is possible at the same time as the rhinoplasty to address breathing problems. This is known as a deviated septum or septoplasty.

What Happens During Rhinoplasty?

During a rhinoplasty, you will be anesthetized. This is to ensure you are comfortable during your surgery. Dr. Levine will discuss what type of anesthesia he will use before your procedure begins.

If you are having a closed procedure, incisions are hidden on the inside of the nose. Conversely, an open procedure is when incisions are made across the fine slip of tissue that separates the nostrils (columella).

After Dr. Levine has made the incisions, the skin that covers the nasal bones and cartilage is carefully raised, and the nose is reshaped. Depending on the size of your nose, bone and cartilage may be removed to give way for a smaller, less bulbous appearance.

After the nose is sculpted to your desired shape, the tissue and nasal skin are re-draped, incisions are closed, and you are ready to start your recovery.

Expected Recovery and Results of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Depending on the extent of the procedure, you will normally be allowed to return home the same day.

Dr. Levine will place a splint or packing inside your nose and bandages on the outside as a support system. You will experience swelling, but it will subside within a few weeks. We will give you explicit instructions on how to care for your surgical site, information about medications we have prescribed, and you will be booked for a follow-up appointment so Dr. Levine can monitor your progress.

Once the swelling reduces and you no longer have to wear gauze around your surgical site, you will notice changes in your nose. It will begin to appear more symmetrical and take on the aesthetically pleasing format you desired.

How do you Know if You’re a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Levine meets with each patient individually to for a comprehensive consultation. He will make sure you understand the rhinoplasty procedure, answer your questions and help you understand what is expected during the recovery process.

Generally, you will be considered a good candidate for this particular surgery if you are in good health and have realistic expectations about your soon-to-be improved appearance.
